Flowering

The chardonnay vines started to flower last week, most of the reds are under way and Donna Rudolph, the assistant vineyard manager at Bedell Cellars in Cutchogue, thinks all flowering will be done by the end of next.

As in the last vintage update, with all the rain, things are growing fast, and at Bedell with 80 acres of vines, it’s taking some time to get the wires up to control the canopy. Their biggest fear, says Donna, has been the freak sudden torrential thunderstorms that have flashed over the North Fork. Such rain can knock off the flowers and interfere with fruit set.
